The beach can help you stay in shape! Walking barefoot on the beach requires the use of more muscle strength than walking on the sidewalk or street. Walking along dry sand challenges your balance and requires extra work from your calf muscles. All of this burns more calories than casual street strolling! Going into the ocean up to your thighs or waist and walking is great exercise as well. The resistance of the water and the current (just not a rip tide!) really enhance the workout on your legs.

Find some yoga or exercise classes that are held on the beach when you are vacationing. All these things are more fun if you do them with a friend or spouse! Walking and talking make the time and distance go quickly. Little additions to everyday activities serve to enhance your fitness and health.
